Polyitaconates are polymers of itaconic acid, which is a molecule made through the microbial fermentation of plant-based feedstock such as corn and sugar beets. In other words, itaconic acid is derived from materials that are safe enough for humans to eat.
Itaconic acid’s structure is similar to fossil-based acrylic acid, making it a promising plant-based alternative. However, many historical attempts at itaconic acid polymerization failed to produce commercially viable results, as the process presented significant technical challenges.
